Position Description

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Student Services Professional IB

UNION CODE: R04

TEMPORARY END DATE: This position is temporary and ends on or before December 31, 2025. Any continuation beyond December 31, 2025 is contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

FT/PT: Full-time   

PAY PLAN: 12-month   

WORKPLACE TYPE: On-site (work in-person at business location)

ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,482 per month.

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $4,482 - $6,342

PAY BASIS: Monthly

POSITION PURPOSE: Campus Recreation and Wellbeing provides optimal service in a safe and fun environment for the CSUB community to achieve physical and mental well-being, personal development, and life-long learning through innovative, student-funded, student-driven programs of fitness, sports, and wellness.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Campus Recreation & Wellbeing, the Assistant for Fitness & Wellness provides daily support for the development, implementation, and maintenance of fitness and wellness programs within established guidelines to foster a healthy and inclusive environment for students and the campus community. The role assists the Director to ensure the effective operation of the Fit Floor, Wellness Suite, studio rooms, and related programs, including the training and guidance of student assistants. Additionally, the position is responsible for supporting safety and risk management standards, assisting with assessing program effectiveness and delivering wellness education that meets the diverse needs of the student population.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fitness & Wellness Programming Support

  • Assist the Director to support daily administration of the Fit Floor, Wellness Suite, and programs encompassed in those areas. Assist with ensuring adherence to departmental and campus policies while fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment for students and the campus community.
  • Support the development and execution of comprehensive and inclusive fitness and wellness programs including group fitness classes, personal training, small group training and wellness activities and workshops to meet the diverse needs of the student population.
  • Assist with implementing wellness and health educational programs, presentations, and activities to meet the diverse needs of the student and campus population.
  • Contribute to maintaining procedures to ensure all fitness equipment is cleaned regularly and maintained according to manufacturer guidelines. Assist with proactively addressing maintenance or safety issues.
  • Following established protocols, assist with instructing group fitness classes, conducting personal training sessions, and fitness assessments as needed under the direction of the Director.
  • Maintain and revise as needed fitness and wellness stat manuals and handbooks in coordination with the Director.
  • Support the Director in the maintenance, implementation, and necessary revisions of program area policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Director in gathering data and/or information to assess facilities, programs, and services to ensure evidence-based practices.

Student Development Support

  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, leading, mentoring, and evaluation of student assistants in relative program areas.
  • Support Director in implementing, and training on policies, procedures, inclusivity, customer service, risk management emergency response, and other applicable trainings for student assistants.
  • Assist Director by participating in assessments to ensure evidence-based practices in student assistant training and meeting learning outcomes.

Safety & Risk Management Support

  • Assist Director in ensuring all fitness & wellness activities adhere to established university and departmental policies and procedures that prioritize participant’s safety and meet industry standards.
  • Assist with coordinating and implementing safety training and risk management instruction to student assistants in compliance with industry standards.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or job-related field and one (1) year of recent related experience. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the appropriate knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job related education may be substituted for the required experience.

LICENSES – Current American Red Cross certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid (or the ability to obtain within the first 60 days of employment).

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) –

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Knowledge of standard practices in fitness and wellness.
  • General knowledge of collegiate/community recreation environment.
  • Ability to assist with teaching group fitness instructing skills to student assistants.
  • Understanding of how to support inclusive fitness and wellness programs that address the diverse student populations, including underrepresented groups and students with varying fitness levels.
  • Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate simple to moderately complex data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
  • Ability to assist with advising students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
  • Ability to recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist with making decisions and carrying through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills: ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A master’s degree in physical education, Kinesiology/Exercise Science, or a directly related field.
  • Current NASM, ACSM, ACE, AFAA or comparable organization certification in Personal Training and/or Group Fitness.
  • Demonstrated experience in the campus recreation setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in fitness and wellness program planning and execution and facilitating workshops and educational sessions.
  • Experience in basic maintenance and troubleshooting of recreation and fitness equipment.
  • Current NIRSA member.
  • American Red Cross Instructor certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: MEDIUM WORK – up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
